The Work of Christmas

Technically speaking, the season of Christmas isn’t over until January 6, the beginning of the season of Epiphany. However, for most of the world, Christmas was over at the stroke of midnight on December 25. In fact, I was in a store on Christmas Eve, and most of the Christmas “stuff” had already been removed, and replaced with Valentine’s Day decorations! The world is moving on from Christmas, ready for whatever comes next.

Disciples of Jesus Christ also move on from Christmas, but in a slightly different way. We carry Christmas with us, and we allow it to shape the life that follows. Our new series will explore some of the ways we respond to what God has done in the Christmas event, and how we can make Christmas more than a day or a season, but a way of life and faith.

The series is based on a poem by author, theologian and civil rights activist Howard Thurman titled “The Work of Christmas”.

When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and the princes are home, when the shepherds are back with their flock, the work of Christmas begins:

To find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among people, to make music in the heart.
