The Last Week
Holy Week is a commemoration of the events that led up to Jesus’ crucifixion. We usually celebrate three of those events – Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday; however, there were other things that happened during that week we call Holy that are often overlooked in the rush toward Easter.
The year, we will be stretching Holy Week over the whole season of Lent, with each Sunday corresponding to one day of Jesus’ final week on earth. That means we’ll actually be starting Lent this year with Palm Sunday; the last Sunday in Lent, which is usually the day we wave palms and shout “Hosanna!” This year our time will be spent focusing on the events of Good Friday.
It may seem a little odd to arrange things in this way, but stretching Holy Week out like this gives us an opportunity for a more in-depth look at these events, and their significance for those of us who would be disciples and followers of Jesus.
